Common Washer & Dryer Brands:

Washing machines and dryers are manufactured by a wide array of different companies, each of which has its own benefits and flaws. Here is a brief list of the more common washer and dryer brands currently available on the market:

  • Bosch
  • Electrolux
  • Frigidaire
  • GE
  • Kenmore
  • LG
  • Maytag
  • Samsung
  • Speed Queen
  • Whirlpool

How to Identify Important Appliance Details:

If you need to schedule an appointment for your washer or dryer, you should obtain as much information as possible about your appliance prior to calling a repair service provider. The more information you have ready to submit to your repair company of choice, the easier you will be able to schedule an appointment for an initial diagnostic, and the smoother the repair process will go overall. These are some examples of what details you should have on-hand when booking a repair appointment:

Washing Machines:

  • Brand name
  • Model number
  • Serial number
  • Door placement on the unit (topload or frontload)
  • Position of the adjacent dryer relative to the washer (stacked, side-by-side, or combination unit)
  • Accessibility of the unit
  • Whether or not the unit is coin-operated

Dryers:

  • Brand name
  • Model number
  • Serial number
  • Position of the adjacent washer relative to the dryer (stacked, side-by-side, or combination unit)
  • Fuel source for the unit (gas or electric)
  • Accessibility of the unit
  • Whether or not the unit is coin-operated

Sounds like a lot of details to cover, right? Don’t worry, because here’s how you can typically identify some of the less-noticeable pieces of relevant information on your own:

Washing Machine Door Placement

  • If the appliance’s door opens forward to the left or right, it’s a frontloading washer. If it opens upward towards the back of the unit, then it’s a toploading washer. Please also note that stacked washers and dryers will always be frontloading units.

Model and Serial Number

  • For frontloading washers and dryers, there is typically a sticker containing both of these numbers located on the inside rim of the appliance’s door. For toploading washing machines, the sticker may be located on the underside of the door. Otherwise, it may be on the back of the appliance itself.

Dryer Fuel Source

  • In order to determine this, inspect the connections on the back of the dryer. If there is thin, flexible metal tubing connected to the back of the dryer that leads to a metal valve (in addition to the unit’s power cord and duct vent), the unit is likely gas-powered. If it has no such tubing attached to the unit, it is likely powered electrically.

When to Call a Professional for Help:

There are times when you can fix an issue with your washer and dryer on your own, and there are times when you should absolutely hire an experienced repair service provider for assistance. Unless you personally possess prior knowledge of, and experience with, washer and dryer repair procedures, you should always enlist the aid of a dedicated technician or company if the problem with your washer or dryer involves any of the following symptoms:

Washing Machines:

  • Not filling with water while running
  • Not spinning while running
  • Not starting a cycle
  • Displaying an error code
  • Not draining while running
  • Moving around excessively while running
  • Making loud, unusual noises while running

Dryers:

  • Not spinning while running
  • Not heating while running
  • Not starting a cycle
  • Displaying an error code
  • Moving around excessively while running
  • Making loud, unusual noises while running
