Understanding HVAC Terminology: A Guide for Homeowners

Whether you spend your time in a state with especially oven-like summers, or one with brisk wintertime air, there is simply no denying the overwhelming importance of the average HVAC system. Day after day, appreciated or unnoticed, your home’s Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning system will, so long as it remains functional, do everything that is within its power to ensure the climate inside your house remains pleasant.

But HVACs, being machines, are made up of many moving parts, and being partially made up of air conditioning units, it branches out through most parts of your home via a network of machinery. With so many moving parts, it can sometimes be difficult to know where any sort of malfunction originates within the device itself. It can also be difficult to know what exactly the moving parts of the system are, as well as how to best describe them. When that happens, it can become tricky to actually communicate what exactly seems to be wrong with your appliance when you seek out HVAC repairs in Los Angeles.

As such, it is beneficial to familiarize yourself with some basic HVAC terminology, not just for the sake of easily describing what is wrong with your appliance when an issue does arise, but also to more easily research what could be wrong with it. To that end, this article will go over some of the more common and distinctive terms used in relation to HVAC systems.

Grilles:

In the context of an HVAC system, the term grille refers not to an appliance used for the sake of barbeque, but rather as the covering for an HVAC system’s duct openings. Grilles are often rectangular in shape, and always have many parallel slots that allow air to vent through them. They are used to both direct the flow of air into whichever room they are present in, and prevent large objects from getting into the HVAC system. In some system models, you can even find the system’s air conditioning filter located behind a grille as well.

If a mechanical issue ever arises within your HVAC system, it is unlikely to involve any of the vent covers. However, in the event that a grille is giving you grief, you will not need the help of an appliance repair person, but will instead just need a replacement vent cover and a screwdriver.

Coils:

When an HVAC unit’s coils are mentioned, it is almost certainly referring to either the condenser coils, evaporator coils, or both. Despite both being vitally important to the function of your home’s HVAC, the condenser and evaporator coils serve two different functions. The evaporator coil cools warm air, while the condenser coil releases that warmth outside.

If you would like to know where your home’s coils can be found, the evaporator coil is typically located inside of your home, usually near the HVAC system’s furnace, while the condenser coil can be found outside of the house, inside of the system’s designated outdoor unit, which itself tends to be situated either on the ground or on top of the roof.

Furnace:

This does not mean the sort of furnace that you would use to smelt ore. The furnace of an HVAC system performs the opposite function to the AC, heating cool air for usage during colder times of the year.

Unlike air conditioners, furnaces require a fuel to burn in order to function, meaning that problems regarding your home’s furnace should be dealt with as soon as possible. Additionally, for safety reasons, the repairing of an HVAC furnace is likely not a task you can or should attempt by yourself, as the furnace itself generates a vast amount of heat and utilizes a highly-combustible fuel source.

Ducts:

Ducts are the channels through which air, heated or cooled, is guided throughout your house. They are boxy, made of metal, usually hidden, and have their openings covered by grilles.

Issues regarding air ducts can be especially cumbersome to deal with. As such, it is usually best to seek the help of an experienced repair service provider that can assist with HVAC repairs in Los Angeles.

Fans:

Air cannot just flow through the air ducts without any force to push it. That is where the fans come in. There are likely to be only one or two main fans in any HVAC, each of which are responsible for much of the noise that can be heard whenever the AC or heater is running. If you ever try to get hot or cold air distributed throughout your home, and either hear no noise, or a noise that sounds unusual, there may be an issue with the fans, at which point a professional repair technician should be called for assistance.

Controller:

If you ever hear the term “controller” being used in reference to your HVAC, it is most likely referring to the system’s thermostat. While there are different varieties of devices that can control all or part of a system, the most common form of HVAC controller by far is the thermostat itself.
